It was not every Amercan in the 40's who got 'free' penicillin. It was only military personnel and others (nurses) contributing to the war effort. Oh, and it wasn't free. For services rendered, these Americans got free food, clothes, 'transportation' and unlimited healthcare, and some not bad free entertainment. Oh, and a pittance paycheck.
