Welcome to IASIU’s first edition of SIU eNews. This electronic newsletter has been designed to meet the suggestions and requests that you, the IASIU member, communicated to us during our readership survey a few months ago. As you clearly stated in the survey, we will keep the printed magazine, SIU Today. Based upon your responses, you will notice that the magazine and electronic newsletter will each contain slightly different content, with most of the chapter events and news items now featured in SIU eNews.

Insurance Industry and NICB Tackle Cargo Theft

ISO and the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) announced on September 29, 2009 their intent to create a national information sharing system to combat cargo crime. By networking existing databases and adding secure reporting and analytic functions, the new system will enable more efficient, accurate, and timely sharing of cargo-theft information between theft victims, their insurers, and law enforcement.

Cargo theft is a multibillion-dollar economic drain that exploits existing gaps in the nation’s information-sharing framework. When theft victims are unable to provide timely and accurate information concerning their losses, it hampers law enforcement’s ability to conduct an effective investigation. Aside from the immediate loss of merchandise, cargo theft affects insurers and their policyholders through added costs that are ultimately borne by consumers.

Texas-South | Vehicle Arson and Forensic Evidence

In September, the Texas-South Chapter was invited to the Gerloff Company’s forensic lab and evidence storage facility in San Antonio, Texas for a laboratory tour and one-hour arson class taught by Quest Fire Analysis.

Chapter members were greeted by the Gerloff Company with a customized TASIU welcome banner and enjoyed refreshments and a catered lunch. The Gerloff Company tour included visits to their climate-controlled 1,400 square-foot forensic laboratory, equipped with a five-ton hydraulic lift, and a state-of-the-art video system. The tour also visited their 30,000 square-foot secured evidence storage facility.
