Good morning, Resource Investors.

Heading into this week, the gold market was near the top of a recent surge that saw it around one-month highs. However, with the U.S. dollar gaining on tepid inflation news, the precious metal lost some luster as a hedge for higher prices. On Tuesday, the April futures contract fell nearly 1% to $1,103.20 an ounce.

The same data that eased inflation concerns, though, also weighed on recovery expectations. A popular report showed that consumer confidence has fallen to its lowest level since April 2009. That, in turn, drained funds from the base metals market. Further dampening the copper market, which fell 2.8% to $3.2345 in the May contract, mining company Rio Tinto said it expected slowing consumer spending to weaken demand in the second half of 2010.

Another market that has been on a run of late is crude oil, which finally climbed about $80 a barrel after several weeks below that mark. That was short lived, as the same recovery concerns and a stronger U.S. dollar pulled down crude, with the April contract wrapping up Tuesday at $78.86.

For more on the reasons behind these moves, see these headlines, where you can catch up on what happened in the resource markets this past week -- and prepare for the next.
