Newsletter Brief

Good morning, Resource Investors.

A weak dollar and additional speculative demand drove gold higher for the eighth straight session today. Additional fundamental support came from central bank announcements that they are in the market for the yellow metal, most recently Russia's plans to purchase 15.6 tonnes of gold. Of course, that comes on the heels of last week's news of India's massive 200-tonne purchase from the International Monetary Fund.

Copper has remained steady, well above $3 per pound, although it has given back some positive territory ahead of the long U.S. holiday. Meanwhile, in Japan, an industry group said that the country's output of copper and copper alloy fabricated products dropped 12% in October.

In the crude oil market, prices rallied last week on the four-pronged bullish news of higher gold prices, a rising stock market, the falling dollar and heavy inventory draws. However, that didn't keep crude from showing weakness at the $80-$80.50 level. The struggle to sustain higher prices might indicate that the fundamental reality of high supplies and weak demand is finally setting in.

It's all in these headlines, where you can catch up with what happened in the resource markets this past week -- and prepare for the next.
