Denis, to your point on the presence or absence of a mandate vis a vis the election, I think there is more of a message than merely opting for the status quo. The message is that the electorate doesn't trust either side enough to give them control. If Obama were so overwhelmingly popular then it would have been easy enough to deliver the house to the democrats. On the other hand, if there was enough support for the republican approach, it would have been an even simpler matter to deliver a republican White House...
